The region:
Lefke, Guzelyurt
The name Guzelyurt means “Beautiful Place”, it is situated close to the foothills of the Troodos Mountains and is the most fertile agricultural area on the island, home to all the fruits and vegetables of Cyprus you could possibly think of. These include tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, lettuces, cabbages, cauliflower, broccoli, auborigine, courgettes, melons, strawberries, apricots, peaches, grapefruit, oranges, mandarins, lemons, bananas and many many more. In the Autumn season beautiful tall palm trees are filled with branches full of sweet dates.
The town may not seem so attractive at a first glance however after a little time spent in exploration, you will see it’s many hidden charms. There is a busy market on Saturday where the local produce is sold, there are several good restaurants serving local food of kebabs and pide (Cypriot style pizza), and of course delicious fish restaurants. Set in the hills there is the church of St. Mamas (patron saint of tax avoiders!), and a very good museum of natural history and archaeology.
The ancient city of Soli, and the remains of the Persian-style palace of Vouni are only a few miles from Guzelyurt town. The road leads on to the village of Yesilirmak and the border with South Cyprus.
