Brazil: record tourist numbers

Brazilian property investors may be interested to learn that a record 11 million tourists visited Sao Paulo last year...

The figures were released by Sao Paulo Turismo (SPTuris), which promotes tourism in the city, and show a 2.8 per cent increase in the number of visitors compared to 2007, Brazzil Magazine reports.

Of the total tourists who visited the city, 1.7 million were foreigners, and collectively they spend £2.3 billion, representing a 2.47 per cent increase on the previous year, according to the news provider.

A survey by SPTuris found that the English were among the most common foreigners visitors to Sao Paulo.

The main reason for people visiting the city was business, with over half of respondents saying that was why they had travelled to Sao Paulo, followed by visiting relatives and friends at 20.7 per cent and leisure at 13.6 per cent.

Brazil has seen some famous tourists recently, with actors Matthew McConaghey and Jude Law spending time on holiday in the country.
