Spain reportedly pays ryanair to fly to empty airport
Spain has been accused of paying Ryanair to fly routes from ghost airport Castellon.
The airport, which was completed in 2011, has been something of a white elephant in the country, with no passenger flights using the site. That changed this year, when the low-cost Irish firm started to run routes there. Spanish site El Confidencial, thuogh, alleges that Spain has been playing €600,000 to Ryanair for the business.
Kenny Jacobs, Ryanair’s chief marketing officer told Telegraph Travel when the flights began that it was due to strong demand from young migrants looking to find work in London. But the airport, run by Canadian company SNC-Lavalin, and Ryanair have both denied the accusations.
