Grand massif is ‘heaven on earth’

The Grand Massif in France is an investment destination like no other…

For winter sports enthusiasts it’s like heaven on earth and for all those who love any outdoors pursuits - from white water rafting to hiking and mountain biking - the Grand Massif proves to be an incredibly and increasingly popular destination for all seasons.

If you’ve never heard of it before it’s time to learn all about France’s Grand Massif region - and if you’ve already been skiing or snowboarding in Flaine, Les Carroz, Morillon, Samoëns or Sixt Fer à Cheval for example, which are the five main resorts within the region, it’s time you learned and appreciated just how much more there is to the Grand Massif than ski and après ski action!

It’s true that in the winter the Grand Massif really comes alive – traditionally it has been known as a winter sports mega resort and it is only in recent times that its year round appeal has been massively developed upon and significantly marketed.

Airport proximity

So, from December you can travel out to any one of six international airports which are all within a maximum of a two hour drive away from the majority of resorts within the Grand Massif - you can then have instant access to over 265 km of downhill skiing - the majority of which is above 2000 meters and therefore guaranteed excellent snow conditions.

You can also have access to 131 individual pistes and 78 ski lifts - and there is skiing and snowboarding action for all abilities with 15 green, 53 blue, 51 red and 14 black runs throughout the Grand Massif.

The emphasis from the beginning of December in France’s Grand Massif is absolutely on winter sporting action and fun - and even if you’ve never skied or boarded before or you want to take a few days away from the slopes to nurse some bruises or rest weary legs there is a wealth of opportunity for snow and winter fun in the Grand Massif…

You can:

  • Go on snow discovery tours as a family
  • Try snow shoe walking as there are 60 km of snow shoe walks throughout the valley floor.
  • Ice skate in Samoens
  • Go in a hot air balloon in Les Carroz
  • Take your children to learn to build an igloo
  • Take professional skiing and boarding lessons
  • Try out a skidoo
  • Go night skiing, cross country skiing or try an off piste ski adventure
  • Indulge yourself with incredible shopping, a spa experience or just wine and dine at some of the exceptional local establishments
  • Visit the botanical gardens or the weekly market in Samoëns
  • Visit the snow parks in Les Carroz or Morillon
  • Try paragliding in Samoëns or Morillon

Aside from the 1,000 acres of traced slopes there are the incredible views across Mont Blanc which is less than an hour’s drive away and you will find yourself staying in one of the most stunningly and naturally beautiful parts of France.

According to Gordon Roughan, director of leading property agent Maison Individuelle: “as a regular visitor to the Alpine areas of France, the Grand Massif remains, for me, once of the best locations for beauty, fun and exhilaration. Whilst the slopes offer fantastic skiing through the wintertime, the summer walking and scenic hikes are breathtaking.”

If you prefer summertime adventures in sunshine and temperate conditions then the Grand Massif offers you an almost overwhelming array of adventure activities.  Where once summertime fun extended only so far as exploring the resorts of the Grand Massive and hiking in the stunning mountains and forestry of this particular region of France, everything has changed dramatically and rapidly over recent years…

Now you can enjoy any or all of the following list of things to do in the Grand Massif in the spring, summer and autumn-time: -

  • You can swim in lakes or go white water rafting on the rivers
  • You can canoe and fish or try kayaking or canyoning
  • Enjoy La Luge, a type of tobogganing
  • Mountain bike and hike
  • Climb mountains and rock faces
