According to Reed Travel Exhibitions, 28.5 per cent of tourists travelled to Spain to play golf in the last 12 months, as the country’s bunkers and greens stay top of the wish list for many golfers around the world.
Marc Pritchard, Sales and Marketing Director for leading Spanish house builder Taylor Wimpey España, comments: “Whilst the course itself is an important factor when selecting a Spanish golfing holiday, the accommodation is equally important once you leave the fairway. Resorts with onsite courses, quality accommodation and amenities are in high demand as they offer the entire package and offer a higher level of security and community living.
Indeed, significant regional preferences can be found across the country. Out of those who travelled to Spain for golfing, 12.7 per cent visited the Costa del Sol, while 3.9 per cent visited the Costa Brava and 3.2 per cent visited the Canary Islands.
Nationality also appears to play a role, as well as the quality of accommodation on offer: the report found that British and Scandinavian golfers preferred to tee off in the former, while French players flocked to the Costa Brava and Germans were up for a game anywhere.
Pritchard adds: “We have experienced a great level of interest in our golfing properties throughout 2013 from not only the British but Scandinavians, Russians and Middle Eastern buyers in particular, where overall purchases from this region have increased by 2,500% in September alone this year compared to the same period in 2012."
