The two men, identified only as Sebastien and Roberto, was reportedly tortured and beat before being burned alive on a bonfire, according to witnesses.

“The rioters launched a manhunt and killed the Europeans,” assistant gendarmerie commander Guy Bobin Randriamaro told the AFP this week.

The pair was suspected by the crowd of carrying out a murder of an eight-year-old boy, whose mutilated body washed up on the beach, and of trafficking his organs, reports The Telegraph. One resident told the newspaper, though, that the claims were rumours and that the two men were scapegoats.

In the wake of the protest and murders, the Foreign Office has now advised against travel to the picturesque island, recommending anyone already on holiday there to stay indoors and follow local security advice.
