Mcmona lisa

Paris - the elegant home of fine dining, art, culture, stunning architecture and, er, McDonalds - yes, that's right, the French capital has its fair share of the fast food giant and, whilst that may not be a surprise to you, how about a new branch of the Golden Arches in the celebrated Louvre Museum on Paris' Right Bank...

The French are well known as a nation for their love of fine food and wine. But it seems they also love a good old intake of junk food - there are 1,142 McDonalds outlets in the country, making France the biggest fan of the fast food chain outside America.

This year is also the 30th anniversary of the first branch of McDonalds in France and the date is being marked in an extraordinary way - with the opening of a branch in the famous Louvre Museum in central Paris.

Home to the world's most famous painting - the Mona Lisa, the museum will now also be home to fast food, which seems to my mind entirely incongruous with the setting.

Indeed, many of France's art and food lovers are outraged at the prospect. This isn't the first time they have faced American consumerism in one of Paris' most famous landmarks - last year, coffee chain Starbucks opened a café close to the museum's entrance.

In the face of the protests, a museum Spokesman defended their choice, saying that it had agreed to a ''quality'' McCafe and a McDonald's ''in line with the museum's image'' to open by the end of the year.

The two outlets would represent the American segment of a new food court, and would be situated ''among other world cuisines and coffee shops''.

You have to wonder whether the sight of the Mona Lisa with a backdrop of frying chip fat was really the look Leonardo Da Vinci was going for.
