Italy hits 60m mark

Italy's population has hit 60 million, national statistics agency Istat has said...

The country reached the landmark, 50 years after growing to 50 million, last November, Istat said.

The resident population was 60,017,677, it said.

The 10-million growth was ''natural'' from 1959 to 1979 and then spurred by ever-increasing immigration, Istat said.
