Town featured in the walking dead shuffles onto ebay
Fans tuning into AMC's TV series, which depicts a group of humans trying to survive a zombie apocalypse, might not immediately think "I wish I lived there", but now, they have the chance to own a piece of TV history - presuming they have very large wallets.
Nine buildings in Downtown Grantville have shuffled onto eBay for sale. The Georgia town was used for a setting in Season 4 of The Walking Dead.
The town was bought out of foreclosure by former mayor Jim Sells, who renovated the space, as well as saw it hired to AMC for their production.
"The hard work has been done," he told USA Today. "We're looking for somebody to put it all into action."
The former textiles town suffered when the mills closed several decades ago, prompting jobs to dry up and the population to do the same. Today, though, a wide range of properties are available, with some of them still occupied.
"This is a money maker for anyone trying to invest in an area that's about to burst," assures the listing on the auction site. "The downtown area has several tenants occupying a good of the 45 per cent percent of the area for sale, so instant revenue."
Indeed, the annual property tax for the town is currently $4,524, while rental income is already $6,500, despite only being half occupied.
"The area for sale is approximately 34,000 Square feet of usable space," adds the listing. "This includes 9 Buildings which include: Retail areas, Loft Apartments, Pizza Restaurant, Bar or Pub, Restaurant, Pharmacy, Office space and many other combinations."
Due to the popularity of the auction, the sellers have since added two more buildings to the lot, which now comprises 90 per cent of Downton Grantville.
The main source of income, though, could well be Grantville's new role as a star of the screen.
"Our main industry right now is Walking Dead tourists," said Sells. "We have people coming from all over the world because of The Walking Dead. That's paying the bills downtown."
The listing also says that three movies have just signed up to film there - one featuring "two very well known actors" and another being a sequel to The Ring.
The cost to own a piece of the American TV industry? $680,000. Let the hordes descend.
