45p an hour: how much qatar world cup builders are paid?
Migrant builders working on the first stadium for the Qatar World Cup are being paid as little as 45p an hour, according to the Guardian.
The newspaper reports that more than 100 workers from the world's poorest nations are working the al-Wakrah stadium ready for the tournament. The Gulf state is splashing out a staggering £134 billion on infrastructure for the event, but workers are reportedly not receiving their fair share.
"The pay rate appears to be in breach of the tournament organisers' own worker welfare rules," reports Robert Booth and Pete Pattisson.
The stadium has been designed by British architect Zaha Hadid, who has already caused controversy with the building's apparent similarity to a part of female anatomy.
