A new report, which compared 151 countries, ranked destinations using a range of factors, including life expectancy and ecological footprint. While France is a popular destination for many well-to-do types looking to retire in luxury, though, many high-income nations do not rank very highly on happiness.
The map was compiled by Movehub, based on information from the Happy Planet Index, which was produced by the New Economics Foundation. The algorithm represents the length and happiness of lives produced by each country per unit of environmental input.

As a result, France is ranked 50th, below the UK (41) and Germany (46) and above Australia (76). At number one? Costa Rica.

Vietnam was ranked second, followed by Columbia, Belize and El Salvador.

Expat Forum, though, notes that the data does not take into account other factors, such as human rights issues or unrest, which can be present in some countries higher up in the rankings.
