Rio olympic village construction enters final straight

The construction work on the 2016 Rio Olympic Village has entered its final straight, the Rio City government has announced.

Officials have released a new time-lapse video to mark the progress that has been on the site ahead of next year's summer Olympic Games.

The two main building clusters and the athletes’ village for the Olympic and Paralympic Games are being prepared. Competition venues are taking shape at Barra Olympic Park, which will be the heart of the Games, and Deodoro Olympic Park, which will be the second largest venue cluster, along with the Olympic and Paralympic Village, where athletes will stay.

The video highlights the transformation of the Barra Olympic Park site from an old motor racing track into a fledgling multi-sports complex.

When completed, the main Olympic Park, located in Jacarepaguá, will host 16 Olympic and nine Paralympic sports. Taking shape in an area of 1.18 million square meters, the site will feature the Arena of the Future, which will be dismantled after the competition and turned into four municipal schools, and the X-Park in Deodoro, which will span 500,000 square metres and include an artificial lake and ag BMX track will become the second largest leisure park in the city.

"Construction at the Olympic and Paralympic Village is in the final straight and it is already possible to see the communal outdoor areas being landscaped," added officials.
