The photo sharing website has become a popular hub for people taking pics on the go, whether it's of their homes or the areas nearby. Tourists on holiday, meanwhile, highlight pretty hotspots for others to check out. If you notice a lot of people taking selfies in your local neighbourhood, you know you've moved to the right area.
There are now 80 million pictures shared on Instagram every day - enough to prompt 3.5 billion daily likes. But where are the most beautiful places you should be visiting - and posting your own selfies?
With the year almost over, Instagram has released the list of 2015's most Instagrammed cities, along with the most popular location in each one.
The top three are no surprise: New York's Times Square, one of the busiest squares on the planet, followed by Paris' Eiffel Tower and London's Tower Bridge. But the list throws up some interesting favourites, from Chicago's Wrigley Field to The Dubai Mall in the UAE.
