Photo of the week: chicago, according to stanley kubrick

Halloweeen is a time when millions of film fans dust off their copies of The Shining on DVD. Years before Stanley Kubrick directed one of the scariest films ever made, though, he was a journalistic photographer. After his photos on the school magazine caught the eye of Look magazine, he started working for them.

During that time, he visited Chicago at the ripe age of 31 - and Mashable have printed a range of the photographs that he took. They were originally printed under a series called Chicago - City of Extremes, capturing everyone from traders and steel workers to children living in poverty-stricken slums and, crucially, the influx of African-American workers in the Great Migration.

As 31st October descends, it is a rare insight into the evolution of a horror cinema great's career, but also a fascinating document of life in a US city from decades ago.
