Thailand lifts state of emergency in bangkok
The state of emergency declared in Bangkok this year is to be lifted today by the Thailand government.
The status was implemented by officials in January in response to anticipated unrest from demonstrators, who carried out a shutdown of the country's capital city for weeks, disrupting traffic in some areas and leading to occasionally violent protests.
23 people died during the period. Now, though, with protest figures dwindling and confined to one part of the city, the government is set to lift its state of emergency, which has caused some relief to tour operators, who saw visits to the city cancelled last month amid the turmoil.
"Lifting the emergency law should have a positive impact on businesses. Many really felt the pinch and lost customers because the state of emergency was in place, including tour operators who saw huge cancellations," political analyst Kan Yuenyong at Siam Intelligence Unit told Reuters.
