Garage goes on sale for $900k
Ever wanted to live in a million-dollar garage? Now is your chance, as a brick outbuilding in Washington has arrived on the market for the staggering sum of $900,000.
The property has everything you could wish: zero beds, zero bathrooms and cosy brick walls. It even has a unique address: "0 21st Street Northwest", because it does not have a real house number.
The unit has colourful history too - it was built all the way back in 1921 - and character unlike most inner-city mansions: Zillow categorises the roof type as "Other".
The site estimates the mortgage to be an affordable $3,301 per month, with furniture, bedrooms and other amenities not included. (The garage does, though, come with both water and electricity.)
While buyers struggle to get onto the bottom end of the property ladder, though, this has become the norm in prime housing markets where demand is high and space is low: prices are up and land comes at a premium.
Last year, the UK's most expensive garage was sold for £550,000. The 11ft by 7ft property was large enough to hold just one car, but its location in the heart of London's prime neighbourhood (the unit was off King's Road in Chelsea) was enough to push up its value to dobule that of the average UK asking price.
The London market has since begun to moderate, but the average price of property in the capital is still significantly higher than the rest of England and Wales: £462,799, according to the Land Registry, compared to £178,007.
At £591,988, Washington's garage eclipses even the priciest petrol storage unit in UK. Space there, though, is equally sought-after, while prices are equally astronomical: "homes like this sold for $200K-3.4M", according to Zillow.
"A developer's dream!" the listing on Estately boasts. "Turn this prime location into a project of your own!"
The garage is Zoned R-5-B, which means it is eligible for residential development as apartments.
"Bring an architect with you to see the potential!" adds the listing.
It has been viewed 3,351 times within the past seven days on Zillow. Better get your architect on the phone pronto.
