Derelict albanian base to become tourist attraction
A derelict Albanian military base is set to become a tourist attraction this summer.
Sazan Island, which is still home to two sailors, may be technically operational, but will soon become a fully-functioning tourist attraction.
What once was an isolated, unreached spot, a mystery to almost all Albanians but a few then-communist leaders, may now turn into an attractive place, especially for foreign tourists,” Auron Tare, of the National Coastal Agency, tells The Telegraph.
Tourism currently accounts for 4.8 per cent of Albania’s GDP, but the small island is hoped to have a big impact upon future figures, with plans including the conversion of anti-nuclear tunnels into wine cellars or the creation of a coastal heritage site. One proposal for a casino has been refused.
