Swedish home struggles to overcome rude name

A home in Sweden is struggling to sell, as buyers appear to be afraid to tackle the obstacle of its home town's rude name.

The property, which has two bedrooms and is located near Laholm, is priced at an extremely affordable 422,000 kronor, the equivalent of just £31,247. At a time when Sweden is facing a housing shortage, demand for such homes can be very high. The property, though, has languished on the market for almost three years.

Why has it not sold? Swedish media suggest that the reason is because of its address: the home is located in the village of Snorrslida. Far from being in some private part of the country, the name translates to another type of private part altogether: in Swedish, it means "penis vagina".

This is not the first time that such rude associations have caused havoc for property owners: in 2013, residents in George Road, Merseyside, discovered that their cul-de-sac looked like a Male member from above - something that was discovered by one user on Google Earth.

"Who would want to live in the cul-de-sac that everyone is taking the mick out of?” 45 year old resident Carl Hodge told UK press.

You're right in guessing that it did not take much more than that for the advert to go viral in Sweden over the weekend.

Reaction online has been similar this peculilar postal discovery. "Whoa, slow down for a second. There's a place in Sweden called Snorrslida," someone tweeted this month.

The agent handling the property's sale, though, killed any suggestive mood immediately, insisting to The Local that the reason the property is on the market is because of its condition.

Henrik Håkansson works for a company that markets homes to Danish buyers, who, he argued, would not get the same giggle from the meaning of the words. Indeed, the village name is thought to come from Viking times, when "Snorr" was a name and "lida" meant "hill".

"It's a very small area with not many customers, but we've sold this house before," he commented, adding that he believed buyers would eventually come again.
