Palaces for the People: Guastavino and the Art of Structural Tile opens this month at the Museum of the City of New York and features the work of Spanish designer Rafael Guastavino and his son.

Photographed by Michael Freeman, the duo's signature colourful tiles combined careful brickwork with artistic engineering to create spectacular arches that now form cities in every type of property, from Bars and train stations to even zoos.

"Once widely influential and sought out by McKim, Mead & White and other leading architects of the day," reads one card at the exhibition (quoted by Gizmodo), "the Guastavino Company is now almost forgotten despite the millions of people who pass through spaces defined by their design."
