Advice from the experts
Overseas investors considering purchasing property in Spain have been urged to conduct
extensive research and get local advice before they make a decision...
The advice comes from Bruce Wilson, a Tax Partner at chartered accountant Campbell Dallas, who also stated
that buyers need to ensure they are clear about why they are purchasing a Spanish
property and that they can deal with potential setbacks.
"It's a different culture, different rules, different laws; you've just
got to be so careful," he remarked, noting that the system used in Spain differs from that in the UK and can be difficult for foreign
buyers to understand.
And he cited the area of Catral as an example of the pitfalls of buying property
in Spain,
explaining that many homes are being threatened with demolition as they were
built without the permission of the federal Government.
A growing number of buyers may need to follow Mr Wilson's advice, as property
expert Simon Calder has predicted the country will still remain an attraction
to Britons despite the faltering value of the pound.
