Seattle "spite house" up for sale
It is the stuff of legend in American housing: spite homes, which are built or left standing out of sheer awkwardness.
Seattle's Edith Macefield joined the ranks of properties that refused to be knocked down despite being in an inconvenient location when a shopping mall was erected around her. The developer offered her $1 million for the plot, but she refused to move, leaving the 1,050 square-foot property standing as it become engulfed by a concrete retail centre.
Edith passed away in 2008, leaving the home in her will to Barry Martin - none other than the construction superintendent for the development. After Martin sold it the following year, the home has been empty, and will be put up for auction next month.
