Sarkozy calls for tighter immigraton controls
Nicolas Sarkozy has called for tighter immigration controls in Europe. The former French President, whose conservative UMP party is divided by pro-Europe advocated and Eurosceptics, has proposed that the Schengen travel zone should be suspended, with a revamped version introduced to prevent foreigners who enter the zone being able to enjoy welfare benefits in its member states.
Writing in Le Point he said that Europe's immigration policy so far had been a "clear failure", arguing that not all eurozone countries are equal and that a two-speed EU should be implemented.
