Welcome to gross avenue! Queensland's worst street names

Queensland is also home to a Butt St in Harristown (Toowoomba) and Butland St in Bracken Ridge but bummed out streets are not the only unfortunate addresses in the state, reports Perth Now.

From Gross St to Wanka Rd, the snigger-inducing names have made it through the approvals process and on to the nearest street sign.

LJ Hooker Gladstone agent Bevan Rose, currently selling his third house on Woollybutt St, New Auckland, said the unusual name attracted attention but didn't put people off buying.

"It's a talking point though put it that way," he said. "There was a big woollybutt tree there … I thought someone in the street must have had a woolly butt," Mr Rose said.

A Brisbane City Council spokesman said the most common street name signs that are stolen are car names, girl names, boy names and anything to do with popular culture at the time. Batman St, Clayfield, was often on the hit list.

In the past 12 months, 1173 street name signs went missing in the Brisbane City Council area alone. Mr Franklin said Wanka Rd in Cecil Plains (Dalby) was another. "They had to engrave it (the street name) in stone and put the stone there because people kept stealing the sign," he said.

Queensland streets are named after suggestions from developers are approved by the local council. New names must not be confusing, hard to pronounce, offensive or the same as another street within a 5km radius.
