Luxury home balances on edge of cliff
If you think you have had a bad week, try moving to Lake Whitney, Texas. A $700,000 home on Overlook Court has taken its street name a little too literally, reports WFAA. The stunning building, built in 2007, is currently hanging over the precipice of Lake Whitney, 75 feet above the water in a perpetual battle with gravity. On Tuesday, though, it began to lose.
Residents who live across the lake heard a loud crash at 6.30pm earlier this week, as part of the cliff collapsed into the water.
"I immediately thought it was an earthquake or blasting; it was loud, really loud," Connie Ash told the local press. "And then I saw smoke, dust, water... I don't know, it was a huge cloud of stuff."
Together with Jackie McNamara, the neighbours contacted the police to inform them of the house's downward slide. Chief Deputy Mark Wilson later confirmed that another section of the home fell off just before 11pm.
"You used to look flush at the roof but then I could see it was somewhat down," added Connie. "You could see it... more and more of the top of the house that's moved. You're looking through the binoculars, just watching it."
The Hill County Sheriff ordered the owners of the premise to evactuate two weeks ago after detecting a crack in the cliff nearby and a dramatic shift in the soil. Just days later and the owners would have been part of the gradual fall of the now condemned property.
A small warning sign saying "EXTREME DANGER: STAY OFF PREMISES" has been placed in frontof the building.
When will it complete its inevitable downward path? No one can give an exact answer. One thing is certain, though: the owners will be responsible for cleaning it up.
