Oz landowners claim fire grant

Hobby farmers whose properties were hit by the bushfires are eligible for a one-off payment of £2,400...

About 1000 rural landowners are expected to apply for the grant from the Victorian Bushfire Appeal Fund.

Fund Chairman John Landy said yesterday the £2,400 was available for people who had properties of five hectares or more, and could be used for fences, sheds, troughs and tanks or to regenerate burnt land.

Mr Landy said he and his advisory board had been concerned about the amount of fencing lost or damaged in the Black Saturday fires.

"We are attempting to strike the right balance between ensuring generous donations to this fund are dispersed in accordance with the intent of the donors, and meeting the needs of the individuals, families and communities affected by these horrific fires," Mr Landy said.

Yesterday's announcement brings to more than £112 million the amount allocated so far from the £149 million fund.

People wanting to apply should call the fund hotline on 1800 180 213 or go to www.dhs. Vic.gov.au/bushfireappeal.
