The king's planes have entered the bidding
The two iconic Planes, which were part designed by Presley himself, sum up the kind of rock star extravagance that the Graceland legend was known for. Presley purchased his first - a Convair 880 Jet - from Delta Airlines in April 1975, for the not immoderate sum of $250,000. He named it the "Lisa Marie" after his daughter, explains the listing on Julien's Auctions.
Elvis refurbished it to incorporate plush sleeping quarters, a penthouse bedroom with a custom-made queen size bed, an executive bathroom with gold faucets and even a gilded washbasin. A videotape system linked to four televisions and a stereo system with no fewer than 50 speakers added to the glamnour.
The last flight the plane took was when it transported Priscilla Presley and George Hamilton from California to his funeral. Since then, it has been on display on the Graceland estate, with fans touring the aircraft during visits.
Elvis loved his Lisa Marie so much that he bought a second plane - Hound Dog II, a Lockheed JetStar - while waiting for it to be refurbished. This joined Lisa Marie on the Graceland property.
The current operators, though, have given notice that their agreement will expire in April 2015 and that the planes will need to be removed.
The two planes will be offered together to bidders at a sealed auction, with the auction house forecasting a value of at least $10 million.
