Cape verde's sporting chance
Cape Verde's golf and watersports opportunities are major draws for
holidaymakers and BTL investors, claims one company...
As early as 2006, the potential for golf to take off on the archipelago was
noted by etenerife.com, which commented on the role of South African
star player Ernie Els in designing new courses.
It described Cape Verde as "an ideal golf destination", adding:
"For those who have already been lucky enough to visit Cape Verde they are
already aware of the income-generating possibilities of property investment
within the archipelago, especially with the new development of the golf
resorts."
World class venue
Some locations combine golf with water sports and other activities. Capeverdeuk.com
has noted that this is true of the island of Santiago, where the Santiago Golf
Club near Praia has in its 650 acres facilities for both sports, plus tennis, a
spa and riding facilities.
As for watersports, surfing is one opportunity afforded by the wind and waves
of Cape Verde, with the Professional Windsurfers Association
(PWA) World Cup being held there this month.
The venue by Ponta Preta was praised in the PWA's review of the competition,
which stated: "Now in its third year, the Cabo Verde PWA World Cup has
firmly cemented its reputation as a truly world-class competition venue, with
2009 being no exception.
"Further on in the piece, it said the event "will forever be remembered
for delivering awe-inspiring conditions and some of the finest wave riding ever
witnessed on the PWA World Tour".
Fuelling BTL demand
That such praise should be lavished on the venue by a leading body in the sport
may be a big boost to surfing in Cape Verde.
This in turn may attract more holidaymakers to come to the islands and enjoy the
activity, fuelling demand in the buy-to-let tourist sector, not least for
accommodation close to the waves. As a result, the sport may be a catalyst for
continued growth in the Cape Verde property sector.
