Fco warns tourists over bangkok shutdown

Over 800,000 British nationals visit Thailand every year, but that number is set to take a hit as political demonstrations are planned from 13th January onwards.

112 flights from Singapore and Hong Kong to the Thai capital have already been cancelled until late February due to reduced demand ahead of the shutdown, the Bangkok Post reports.

The FCO warned British tourists last week that political demonstrations "continue in and around Bangkok and elsewhere in Thailand".

"Some of these have been violent, including the use of gunfire, and there have been some casualties," the FCO added, also advising against "all but essential travel" to the provinces of Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat and Songkhla on the Thai-Malaysia border.

"The situation is unpredictable, and further protests are expected. There have been calls for an increase in protest action from 13 January, which may cause major disruption to travel on main roads in and around Bangkok. You should avoid all protests, political gatherings and demonstrations."
