Direct flights from Gatwick to Tirana will climb from three to five times a week, a move that is driven by rising demand from passengers to explore the increasingly popular Balkan country both for short-break holidays and, some suggest, as a potential second home location.

As an EU potential candidate country, Albania shows positive signs of following other Southern European countries such as Croatia and Montenegro in terms of their infrastructure and tourism development, Peter Walshe, Marketing Director for Albania's leading Lalzit Bay Resort & Spa, located 30 minutes from Tirana's airport, tells TheMoveChannel.com.

Indeed, the country is already planning to build a new airport in the south - accompanying the existing international airport in Tirana - which the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure says will help harness rising tourism figures and spread that potential across the country.

"The future is looking bright for Albania," says Walshe. "With an increasing number of tourists visiting each year combined with the new BA flights, the country looks set to explode as a tourist destination. One of Albania's biggest attractions - aside from its cultural and historical charms, balmy Mediterranean climate and stunning beaches - is definitely its rock-bottom cost of living.

"And like their Balkan neighbours, interest from international second home buyers is also steadily increasing as people realise the superb buying opportunity in this hidden gem of a country."
